Retro Reviews Reference

The body of the review is followed by the Footer Block. The last line of the Footer Block is the Genre Line, following one or two Review Lines.

I want the Genre Line to be a “readable out loud” description of the reviewed work, read from left to right, ignoring duplicate words or subgenres in parentheses. So a genre line looking like 👻👨‍👩‍👧‍👦🌑🦄🤴😥🎧 would indicate that the movie is a supernatural family dark fantasy drama about music. The fantasy (classic) emoji isn't spoken out loud because we’ve already said the word “fantasy” and because parenthetical subgenres are for additional information, not for the reading of the genre line. As another example, a supernatural monster slasher horror drama would show a genre line of 👻🧌🔪💀😥.

Don’t read the words “romance”, “drama” or “comedy” out loud if you've already read “romcom” or “dramedy”.

When an emoji represents a genre with a word/word format, only one word is read aloud, whichever you think fits best, even though either would probably be fine.

For readability, the order of the emojis in this index is the order they would be used in a review.

*Dark (🌑) is used most frequently with Fantasy or Comedy, so to prevent other genres from interrupting a correct reading, and to allow searching for either combo, it is used directly before the partner genre and can occur twice on a genre line if a work is both Dark Fantasy (🌑🦄) and Dark Comedy (🌑🥸).

About an Animal emojis are used twice to indicate that a work is about more than one of the particular animal. Generally speaking, the animal must be a significant character in the work for the work to be considered about that animal, with more leniency in interpretation given towards more rare animals, than, say, a dog, cat or horse.
