Itinerary, December 4-6
Rick Retro's Realm, Project #1: 2024 Christmas Tour – Three all-American Christmas classics.
We got up early yesterday for Day 2 and caught up with the “Scrooge” shorts we didn’t get to on Day 1.
The best of the lot from both days was the 1914 British version accurately titled “A Christmas Carol”. It was a good way to start the day.
We finished Day 2 with our first feature-length stop on the tour, Babes in Toyland. It only made three of the ten all-time top Christmas lists we checked. Not bad, but I’m not expecting it to rank high in a future similar list of my own.
We will watch two feature-length versions of A Christmas Carol. tonight, as previously noted.
On December 4 we will be viewing our first film that made eight of the ten all-time best Christmas movie lists I consulted:
1945 Christmas in Connecticut
I’ve never seen this one before... I used to love watching old movies in a movie theater, but rarely had that opportunity. I disliked old movies on TV as a kid—black and white, low definition and commercials ruined them. But I’m looking forward to seeing them now on my 7-foot diagonal HDTV!
December 5 is the day for the all-timer that made every list and topped more than one. It’s based on a short story we will read first, which in turn is loosely based on A Christmas Carol.:
1944 “The Greatest Gift”
short story by Philip Van Doren Stern (You can read it here.)
1946 It's a Wonderful Life
December 6:
1954 White Christmas
(made 8 of 10 lists)
Don't forget the popcorn!
