Rick Retro’s Reference Rundown #4: Header Block, Secondary Information Line
Retro Reviews Reference
In the Header Block, there will be a Secondary Information Line, if applicable. It will usually directly follow the Primary Information Line, but on occasion, there may be an intervening explanatory line or Version Line.
The purpose of the Secondary Info Line is to let you know the origins of the reviewed work, if it is not an original work. This line may be omitted if the work is not original, but is part of a series of works that began with an original work (see Reference: Franchise/Series Lines).
The format of the Secondary Info Line:
Based on [type of work] (literature subtype) [title] (year) by [creator]
For example:
Based on literature (novella) A Christmas Carol. (1843) by Charles Dickens
Also on this line, you may see one or more of the following emojis:
❗ Classic
This reviewed work is set in the same time period as the original work and usually follows the story closely.
‼️ Modernized
This reviewed work modifies the original work to tell a more contemporary story. It may follow the story of the original work closely, but it may follow the original only loosely, or barely at all.
🔙 Remake
The reviewed work is based on an original work of the same media type, but tells the same story, not being a sequel or prequel. Or if the reviewed work is based on a work of a different media type, it is not the first adaptation of the reviewed work’s media type.
🔜 Remade
The reviewed work is followed by remakes based on either the reviewed work, or the original work on which the reviewed work is based. If the reviewed work is a modernized adaptation of an original work, later adaptations of that original work are not considered remakes of the reviewed work unless they include the same modernization.
A ⭐ emoji used on this line indicates that a Retro Roundup including the reviewed work is intended for future publication, and will serve as a linked list of related works. If a Retro Roundup has already been created, the relevant term(s) that describe the Roundup’s related works will be linked to the Roundup.
