The original version of this short film was lost, but a music score was added in 1929 and this 10-minute version was released in America and is now viewable on YouTube.
The original probably ran more like 18 minutes in England due to differing projection technology, so this sound edit has visuals that appear ever-so-slightly speeded up.
At only ten minutes long, this is pretty much another CliffsNotes version to read with moving illustrations between title cards. Thankfully it’s better written than the 1913 version. And has all four ghosts with better costuming and special effects than I’ve yet seen.
While it was better written than the 1913 version, there was an Epic Unforced Fail, when the iconic Scrooge line, “Bah! Humbug!” was changed to “Oh, bah! Bosh!”
And a Spoiler Alert: The ending omits the iconic Tiny Tim line, which is, to me, Epic Unforced Fail #2.
At just ten minutes, it didn’t feel like a waste of my time to watch it for reviewing purposes, but I highly doubt I’ll ever watch it again. It might have a little value as a short video to introduce, say, a precocious 7-year old with a short attention span both to a great literary work and also to the era of silent shorts in film history.
Onwards!
